Cadets Give Back to Community
5 February 2013

From The Montreal Gazette, Feburary 11 2013

By Orly Weinberg

One of the cornerstones of the cadets movement is to engage youth in their communities through service, support and programs. At their recent Commanding Officer’s Parade, air cadets from 803 North Shore Sabre Squadron in Pierrefonds-Roxboro were able to give back to their community in a significant way.

The February 5th parade was intended to promote the new recruits; a secondary purpose was to engage the squadron with members of its community. The parade was presided over by a number of dignitaries and special guests from Pierrefonds-Roxboro, West Island Community Shares, and the Royal Canadian Legion in Roxboro.

Based on funds raised by cadets at a walk-a-thon last November, a donation was made to West Island Community Shares. This organization was selected for its support of so many community groups serving primary needs in theWestIsland. Nathalie Choo-Foo, External Events and Community Coordinator, was on hand to receive the donation, and to participate in the inspection of cadets on the parade square.

Another honoured guest was Marguerite Aubut, Director of Culture, Sports, Recreation and Social Development, from the borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro. The city has been supporting 803 North Shore Sabre Squadron for over 40 years, turning out successive generations of upstanding, engaged youth. Also present were members of the squadron’s official sponsor, the Roxboro Royal Canadian Legion, including board President Mike Sheppard, First Vice-President John Floud, and John Clendinneng.

Apart from the donation, cadets have many opportunities to show their support in the community. Members of the squadron attend annual events such as the Legion’s Remembrance Day parade and poppy sales, and the Canada Day parade inPierrefonds. The band and flag parties are involved in local events such as escorting inRiverdaleHigh Schoolstudents at their graduation. Monthly visits to theVeteransHospitalin Saint-Anne-de-Bellevue allow cadets to interact with veterans and to assist in their bingo night.

Air Cadets provides youth ages 12-18 with leadership and survival skills, aviation instruction, music, sports and public speaking programs, and more. If you want to learn more about the squadron, please see their website, www.803squadron.com.
